Spiritual Harm
Your story of faith deserves to be honored—even the painful parts.
Spirituality can be a profound source of hope, meaning, and community. But for many, it has also been a source of harm. When religious experiences include manipulation, shame, exclusion, or abuse of power, the result can be deeply wounding. These experiences are often minimized or silenced, leaving people unsure whether their pain is valid—or whether healing is even possible.
Spiritual trauma may arise from:
- Legalistic, fear-based, or authoritarian church cultures
- Religious leaders who misused their position or violated trust
- Rejection or exclusion based on gender, sexual identity, or questions of belief
- Teachings that led to internalized shame, self-neglect, or denial of personal boundaries
- Pressure to stay silent about abuse, mental health, or doubts
Spiritual trauma is not “just a difference in belief.” It’s a rupture in the places where we expected to find safety and love. And because this harm happens in relationship—with people, institutions, and even our image of the divine—healing must also happen in relationship.
All aspects of your story are welcome. You may be deconstructing harmful beliefs, rebuilding a sense of self, grieving community loss, or finding a new way to relate to faith. In therapy, we will hold space for your questions and pain with reverence and without agenda. You deserve to feel whole and at peace.
